ITU (originally known as the International Telegraph Union) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs. Founded on the principle of international cooperation between governments (Member States) and the private sector (Sector Members, Associates and Academia), ITU is the premier global forum through which parties work towards consensus on a wide range of issues affecting the future direction of the ICT industry.

One of its most prominent and popular groups is the FG DFS – the focus group – in which our very own Sharath Dorbala was chosen to participate as an SME on the world of both mobile and digital financial services.

The Digital Financial Services Focus Group (FG DFS) acts as an open platform for digital financial services stakeholders – such as telecom regulators; financial services regulators; digital financial services providers, payment platform providers; mobile network operators; international organizations and industry forums and consortia – to share knowledge and lessons learned in the field with the objective of identifying the standardized frameworks needed to support the scaling up of digital financial services usage globally.

Key stakeholders and opinion leaders that shared the stage with Mr Dorbala include – European Central Bank, the World Bank, The Central Bank of Brazil and even Huawei. Some of the key topics discussed included: Impact of Social Networks on Digital Liquidity, Bulk Payments and the DFS Ecosystem, Payment System Interoperability and Oversight: The International Dimension, Enabling merchant payment acceptance, Merchant Data and Lending and much more.

To learn more about progress and development of the above and across all of the DFS and MFS domains, refer to the ITU website and the DFS FG.
